Angela Babin
Psychotherapist and Teacher, The Mindfulness Workshop
Angela Babin, MS LCSW, is psychotherapist who draws upon her LCSW training and 32 years of training in karate to empathize with human emotion and to understand how to face mental, physical and emotional challenges with grace under, even under pressure.
Angela also draws on her 15 years as an Integrative Therapist in a hospital setting - working in pediatric oncology/hematology, and palliative and critical care. She was the Senior Martial Arts Therapist and Instructor utilizing meditation, guided visualization, and martial arts and breathing techniques to help patients find power, confidence, hope and pain palliation. Angela was the Supervisor of an integrative therapist team that was badged and worked in 12 New York hospitals and medical centers.
Angela followed up this work by going deeper with clinical therapy and received her 2nd master’s degree with honors from the Silbermann School of Social Work at Hunter College. In 2017, Angela received a scholarship to attend the Summer Institute in Primary Palliative Care at the NYU Silver School of Social Work, obtaining further post-masters certification in this area.
Mindfulness
Angela is a Qualified MB-CT Teacher.
Daily meditation has been incorporated into her practice for over 20 years, and Angela has personally used mindfulness practice to inform and give space to life challenges such as caregiving, grief and loss. Blending body, breath, and mind has been the guiding focal point and passion of Angela’s practice.
She has experience as a clinician working with individuals (children, teens, adults and seniors), families and groups. She has worked with clients in the medical, community and academic setting, and has run groups including “Self-Care 2 Give-Care” for family caregivers, “De-Stress Around Tests” for college students, and “Mindful Smarts & Martial Arts” for teens and adults who have experienced inter-partner violence.
In 2014, she joined a social services agency providing clients within the entertainment industry supportive counseling and life-support services. She helped pilot Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) clinical groups at her agency, and continues teaching these groups. She has started her journey of certification in MBCT and continues her personal meditation and mindful practice.
Angela specializes in depression, anxiety, chronic illness, caregiving, bereavement, women’s issues and has a passion for helping individuals working in the creative arts. She also has experience and connection to the LGBTQ+ community.
Special Interests
Angela is a senior member (3rd degree blackbelt/sandan) in Shotokan Karate of America, and has trained in Tai Chi Chuan and Muay Thai kickboxing among other styles. She is a karate instructor at Columbia University and in 2020 received the Crime Prevention Award of the Office of Public Safety for her decade-long service in teaching self-defense to the university community.
