Dwayne Brown LCSW, is a psychotherapist providing individual and group therapy to clients as they explore life's experiences and challenges.
From a career in marketing and from life experience, Dwayne brings a rich, enlightened and empathetic attunement to his work as a mental health provider.
He has an ability to keep clients engaged and focused while sensitively motivating them.
As a therapist, being able to treat clients with a clinical and evidenced-based modality that aligns with his spiritual practice is very rewarding.
Dwayne graduated in 2016 from Lehman College and launched his career working with marginalized minority youth and adults experiencing acute and chronic trauma. This trauma lens continues to inform and provides a sensitivity to his work today.
In 2017 he joined a social services agency providing clients within the entertainment industry supportive counseling and life-support services as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT )and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) . Dwayne has training in CBT and MBCT and helped create the pilot MBCT clinical group at his agency. Dwayne has practiced mindfulness and meditation for over 12 years and has embarked on a journey of certification in MBCT.
Mindfulness
Dwayne is a Qualified MB-CT teacher.
Dwayne has practiced Buddhism and meditation for over 14 years. His Buddhist practice began with Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism, chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo and most recently Zen Buddhist practice and study in the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition.
Dwayne explains that the later practice taught him how to "just sit" through zazen (Zen meditation), zazenkai (day-long retreats), traditional services; Zen studies classes and special events that has really supported his growth in the skill of meditation.
Special Interests
Dwayne specializes in anxiety, depression and chronic illness. It is through his own life experiences with many of these issues that he can engage and connect with his clients. In 2019, Dwayne was acknowledged by the NY Chapter of the NASW as an emerging member of the field of social work. He is a board member of Catskills Pride and sits on the steering committee of the IN MY MIND, LGBTQ+ People of Color Mental Health Conference.
